# What the assistant can do

> Everything Atelier's AI can reach today — reading, creating and updating across projects, schedules, products, clients, vendors, tasks and time.

The assistant works on your studio's real data. Not a copy, not a summary
— the same projects, schedules and products you see in the app.

It runs in two places, and they do not reach quite the same things:

* **AI Chat — in Atelier.** The panel at the bottom of the sidebar.
Reaches your whole studio, finance included.
* **From Claude — over MCP.** Reaches projects, clients, vendors,
products, tasks and schedules — **not** proposals, invoices, change
  orders or purchase orders.

<Info>
**Finance is in-app only.** The Claude connector cannot see your
proposals, invoices, change orders or purchase orders — not even to read
them. Ask it about an invoice number and it will find nothing. For
anything commercial, use AI Chat inside Atelier.

## The shape of it

Three verbs, and one that is missing.

| | |
| ---------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Read** | Everything. No restrictions, at any status. |
| **Create** | New records — projects, tasks, products, clients, vendors, schedules, phases. |
| **Update** | Existing records, while they are still yours to change. |
| **Delete** | **Never.** Nothing destructive, at any status. |

## Finding things

## Finance — in AI Chat only

| It can | It cannot |
| -------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------- |
| Read any document at any status, and tell you the status | Send anything to a client or vendor |
| Work on a document while it is `DRAFT` | Change one that has left `DRAFT` |
| | Mark anything paid, confirmed or accepted |
| | Version or accept a proposal |

## Clients, vendors, pinboards, time

Create and update clients, vendors and their contacts. List pinboards,
read their items, and **share a pinboard** — creating the client link.
Start, pause, resume and stop timers.

## Getting good answers

1. **Name the thing.** *the Birchwood schedule* beats *the schedule*.
2. **Ask for the check, not just the change.** *What's approved but not
   ordered?* before *mark them ordered*.
3. **Batch the boring work.** Status updates, product capture and task
creation are all faster in bulk.
4. **Read back anything commercial** before you invoice from it.
