# Welcome to Atelier

> What Atelier is and how it's put together.

Atelier holds the whole of an interior design project: the client, the
concept, the products you specify, what they cost, what you charge, what has
shipped, and what has been paid. One place, one set of numbers.

## How Atelier is put together

Five things, and everything else hangs off them.

* **Studio** — Your workspace. Your branding, currency, tax settings and team
  live here, and everything below belongs to it.
* **Clients** — The people you bill. A client can have several contacts and
  several projects.
* **Projects** — One per job. Holds the timeline, tasks, pinboards and
  schedules for that job.
* **Product library** — Every product your studio has ever specified, shared
  across all projects. Specify a piece once, reuse it forever.

Inside a project you work in two places:

* **Pinboards** are how you show the idea. A canvas of images, plans,
  materials and product shots that the client can open, comment on and
  approve.
* **Schedules** are how you deliver it. An FF\&E list with quantities, costs,
  markup, lead times and procurement status, which turns into purchase orders
  and invoices.

A pin on a board and a row on a schedule can be the same product. Link them
once and a price change updates in both.

## A typical week

<Steps>
  <Step title="Monday — plan">
    Open **Home**. Your overdue and upcoming tasks are on the left; drag what
    you intend to do into **Today**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Tuesday — specify">
    Browse vendor sites, capture products into the library, drop them onto a
    pinboard for the living room.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Wednesday — present">
    Share the pinboard with the client. They comment and approve in their
    browser. Their replies land in your **Inbox**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Thursday — cost it">
    Approved items go onto the schedule. Set vendor cost and markup, apply
    tax, see the client total against the project budget.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Friday — bill and order">
    Raise purchase orders to vendors, create the client invoice from the
    schedule, log your hours.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## The example project

A new studio is not empty. It arrives with one worked example — **Riverside
Condo** — carrying a finished pinboard, 26 products in the library, a schedule
built from them and the client it is all for. It exists so the screens have
something in them the first time you open them: an empty schedule teaches
nothing about what a schedule is for.

It is a complete project, finance included. The client has a name, a billing
address and contact details, so Finance, invoices and purchase orders all have
something real to work from on your first day — nothing in the example is
waiting on a field you have to fill in before it will render.

You will know it by the **EXAMPLE** badge on its card, and by the line where
every other project shows its status, which reads *Explore me* instead. Its
card is deliberately quieter than the rest — dashed border, muted image — so it
never gets mistaken for work.

Everything in it is real and editable. Change prices, restyle the board, set
statuses and watch the totals move; it is a sandbox that behaves exactly like a
live project because it is one.

<Tip>
  The example client is invented — the address is nobody's and the email cannot
  receive mail, so there is no way to write to it by accident. Delete the example
  whenever you have seen enough and its client goes with it, leaving nothing
  behind in your client list. Two things keep that client: another project using
  it, or your having edited it — editing a sample client is how you say it is
  yours now, and Atelier stops treating it as sample data.
